LAMBYKINS OFFERS THE GENTLE TOUCH

Merino Wool is being brought to the fore of baby fashion thanks to a new brand called Lambykins.

The brainchild of two Melbourne couples, Lambykins incorporates modern designs with the practical softness of Merino wool and is appearing in our stores all over the city. Requests for the products have also been made over the internet, with orders sent to Hong Kong and the United Kingdom .

Atholl and Pamela Johnstone and Angela and William White teamed up last September on the project, launching their first set of products on June 1. The couples, who both have young children, saw the value of Merino wool in baby products, but felt the current designs were dated.

They said polyester, often used in baby blankets, was not as soft and light as Merino wool, nor as environmentally friendly. “People are becoming more conscious of natural products for babies,” Mr White, who also works on his parents' Kyneton sheep farm, said.

They saw safety as another plus, as the wool blankets are fire resistant. Using Mr Johnstone's information technology expertise they developed a website and began sourcing Australian Merino wool through a Melbourne knitting mill.

It has not all been smooth sailing for the group, however. Their initial supplier of Merino wool and manufacturer closed its Victorian operation and moved to China.

To keep to their Australian-Made philosophy, they had to find a replacement, which cost them time and money.

Another challenge they have faced is juggling work and children. They have three young children between them, and the White's have another on the way. “We've found ourselves working to all hours of the night packing boxes,” Mr White said.

Their hard work has paid off, however, and they are pleased with the progress the business has already made.

After establishing themselves nationally, they aim to expand in the international market and to expend their product range to children and adult woollen products.
